You know it’s November in Seattle when you look out the window at four in the afternoon and think, “Well, I guess we’re doing dinner soon.” The leaves are underfoot, there’s a rain jacket hanging by the door, and that first sip of coffee feels especially good when you’ve just come in from the cold.
It takes us a minute to settle into November, but there are things we look forward to. A long catch-up with a friend over coffee. The warm glow of shop windows on the way home. Pulling on that sweater we’d almost forgotten about and remembering exactly why we wore it so much last year.
And then there’s that moment when the rain lets up, the sun hits the yellow leaves, and suddenly you decide to walk the long way home. You might get rained on again before you get there, but for a few blocks, you’re glad you went out. That’s November in Seattle, too.
Getting dressed for this month is mostly a matter of thinking one stop ahead. What feels good on a chilly walk might feel like too much ten minutes into lunch. A light layer under a cozy knit gives you room to adjust, and a jacket with a hood comes in handy on the days you swear you can make it from the car without getting wet. As for shoes, this is the month we find out which boots we really trust.
Every new arrival at Meadow this week is a sweater from CIELO or DREAMERS. The timing feels about right. We’re ready for the kind of sweater you pull on with jeans for coffee and errands, then wear again to dinner with your favorite earrings. If you’re hosting Thanksgiving, you might already be picturing which one you’ll have on when you open the door to a houseful of people.
Sometimes we’re surprised by which sweater ends up in regular rotation. You try it on because you like the color, then three weeks later you realize you’ve worn it to lunch, to the grocery store, and to a friend’s house for dinner. By then you know which jeans you like with it and whether you can get away with wearing it again before laundry day. We have a soft spot for those sweaters at Meadow.
And if it’s getting dark by the time you get home, put on something soft, turn on a lamp, and call it a good Seattle day. There’s probably still time for dinner, even if it feels like bedtime. Here’s to November in Seattle, with a favorite sweater on and a little time to enjoy the good stuff. xoxoxoxo
