You may have seen those postcards from Seattle with pictures of a typical sky in each season. Grey, Grey, Blue and Grey. Yes, it gets grey in Seattle. The constant overcast skies can have a big impact on your psyche, mood, physical health and energy level. In addition, you may find yourself binging on Netflix, eating less healthy foods or viewing too much news on your phone.
The past few Springs in Seattle have not been this rainy. I know, I know we have a beautiful green state with lush trees and flowers because of all the rain, but please! I don’t mean to be a debbi-downer but I just got back from Mexico this past week, so I could remember what it was like to see sunshine and feel the warmth on my skin. It’s funny, because all the people at the pool that were fair skinned were from the Pacific Northwest. We asked where they were from and they confirmed they were mostly from Seattle or Portland. I guess that’s one thing about us from this region, we know when to get out of town. It made me think how I could beat these rainy day blues. How can I bring my own sunshine into my life until it decides to show up?
The good news is that there are a lot of simple tried and true techniques to help combat the rainy day blues and greys while still watching a Netflix movie on the sly.
Exercise – It might feel like the very last thing you want to do, but the truth is it works. Moving your body releases endorphins. These tiny molecules actually have similar chemical structure to opioids (think morphine) and they make you feel really good. Get a buddy or join a team. Motivating yourself can be really hard. Motivating your friend, for whatever reason, isn’t.
Don’t sleep too much – It’s really easy on days like this to convince yourself that you’re in dire need of a cat nap or an extra long sleep-in. If you can delay the nap (maybe exercise instead?) and get up with your alarm, you will have a longer, more restful sleep at night, which will better prepare you for tomorrow.
Embrace your inner hermit – Take this as an opportunity to stay indoors and get things done around the house. Make that soup recipe you’ve been meaning to tackle. Hem your pants that have been on your closet floor for months. Clean the bathroom. Take a bath. Watch your favorite movie. Whatever you do, don’t feel guilty about it.
Stay positive – people LOVE complaining about the weather. Too hot, too cold, too rainy…blah, blah, blah. The thing is, there is absolutely nothing you can do about it. So change your perspective. Next time someone says something negative about the sheets of rain pouring down, surprise them by replying with something like: “Ever notice how green the grass stays all year round here?” or “When was the last time you danced in the rain?”…etc. If the weather is your biggest complaint then life ain’t so bad.
Remember this feeling when the sun does, eventually, come out – It will, and when it does, take a moment to close your eyes, feel the bright light on your face, and smile. If you work inside, take your break and go for a stroll outside. Rainy days sure make you appreciate that golden ball of fire in the sky.
Take yourself shopping at Meadow - When I walked into the boutique doors this morning and saw all the brilliant colors, it reminded me how good I feel to pick up something for myself that’s stylish, fashionable and ready to wear for Spring & Summer. It made me have an attitude adjustment about the weather. It’s truly all about making ourselves feel better and finding the sun in the little things.
Chin up, everybody. It’ll be warm in no time. I am feeling warm already just talking about how to get out of this rainy day funk! What I want to talk about is, “Look what’s new at Meadow Boutique!”
SUGARLIPS is new to us and has expanded its line and now they produce fashionable clothing at affordable prices, which are available all over the world and are carried by major department stores and boutiques, including Dillard's, Nordstrom's, Bloomingdale's, Urban Outfitters, Hudson's Bay, Lord and Taylor and many more and drum roll please….now Meadow Boutique! We brought in dresses that will totally make you think about being out in the sunshine and some cute tees to pair with shorts or jeans,
PAINTED THREADS has some great cropped style light sweatshirts and a sweet, striped hoodie with delicious colors of purple, orange and lime green. So yummy!
LOVE TREE has some denim jackets in black and faded blue that would be a nice addition to our wardrobe while we are waiting for the sunshine to return. Throw one over a tee or dress and you are out the door! Another button up denim shirt is another staple to have in your closet. Seems we throw those on over anything or just as a plain old shirt!
We have NALAÏM shoes this week that are for women who have style: those who have already found it and those who are looking for it. Some lovely mules and sandals are on our shoe shelf to be seen!
Check all the photos below and stop in and see for yourself. I always feel like photos never do the clothing justice. If you are like us, we like to feel the fabric and then put it on our skin for the full effect. So this week we look forward to seeing you and what you think of all the new fashion. We promise to bring some sunshine into your life because we need you to bring some into ours too! xoxoxo
